It is a film that has haunted me since childhood. My mother watched it and fed me little tidbits about the horrors of the good doctor, namely what he did, who he did it to, and how cool it was. Of course, at this tender stage of my development, I was scared into conniption fits just by sitting through Michael Jackson's "Thriller", so the last thing I wanted in my head were visions of a cackling physician and his bag of horrifically modified tools of medicine. Fast forward nearly twenty years, and finally I laid eyes on the movie that's had me spending a lifetime saying "Hmmm, I gotta see that!".
In all honesty, there wasn't much special about this film. It wasn't grotesquely bad, but it wasn't that good, either. In fact, the only saving grace it has was Larry Drake's sheer conviction to the titular character. He let off that trademark giggle with such ease that you really believed he was as ape-shit bonkers as he appeared.
This is one of those movies that only horror connoisseurs could really appreciate. If you're only into the big screen, blockbuster horror flicks then this is not for you, but if you like a little comedy in your horror with a pinch of absurdity, then this is right up your alley.
